Tashkent, Uzbekistan - 14-16 October 2019: Training Course on “Safety and Security issues in the management of C and B waste materials in manufacture facilities and laboratories”

From 14 to 16 October 2019, twenty-five relevant experts, scientists and professionals from Uzbek governmental institutions, national agencies and local industrial enterprises, together with technical experts of the European Union’s Centers of Excellence for the prevention, protection and mitigation against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear risks and threats, have discussed and examined the most recent approaches towards a sustainable, safe and secure management of hazardous chemical and biological waste.

A special emphasis has been devoted to the study of the best practices for a correct identification, handling, management and disposal of hazardous waste materials in research laboratories, clinics, healthcare services and chemical production sites as well as to the analysis of the most frequent points of weakness found in chemical, biological and biotechnological labs across the world.

The EU experts, coming from the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Technologies of the Italian National Research Council, CNR-SCITEC, and from FORMIT Foundation in Rome, have also presented to the participants a series of possible strategies for the reduction or, even, the elimination of highly hazardous waste solids and liquids in research centers and small production sites. The training course has also included a train-the-trainer session to allow the participants to transfer the main outcomes of the 3-day-long joint work activity to other colleagues and experts operating in Uzbekistan on similar themes.

The training session is a part of the EU CBRN Project no. 65 on “Strengthening chemical and biological waste management in Central Asia countries for improved security and safety risk mitigation”, which is being carried out in five partner countries of Central Asia.
